An Edmonton man faces numerous Criminal Code charges following a March 5 dispute at a downtown hotel that saw police confiscate a loaded 9-mm handgun.

A March 8 press release from Westlock RCMP Staff Sgt. Dwayne Rawson says that at 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, they received a complaint of a man in possession of a handgun in the area of the Westlock Hotel.

Police responded and were told by witnesses that a man had been in a dispute with patrons outside the bar.

RCMP were also told that during the incident the man brandished a handgun, then fled the scene in a Chevrolet Avalanche.

Rawson said that while officers were speaking with witnesses, the Avalanche returned to the scene.

RCMP say they then 'contained" the truck and arrested the suspect without incident.

During their investigation police recovered a loaded 9-mm handgun they say had been discarded by the suspect prior to returning to the hotel. No shots were fired and there were no reported injuries.

Forty-seven-year-old John Stanley Martin of Edmonton has been charged with a number of unspecified Criminal Code offences and is scheduled to make his first Westlock Provincial Court appearance this Wednesday, March 11.
