Westlock town and Rural firefighters responded to house fire on April 21 at the intersection of 103A Street and 106 Avenue. They were able to knock down the flames in minutes, town fire chief Stuart Koflick said, but the home will remain uninhabitable for the foreseeable future.

No one was injured after a fire ripped through part of a home at the intersection of 103A Street and 106 Avenue in Westlock on Easter Monday.

Westlock town firefighters received the call about the fire at around 5:30 p.m. on April 21, said town fire chief Stuart Koflick.

When they arrived at the scene, they found fire and smoke coming out of the side of the home.

“The team initiated an aggressive exterior attack followed by an interior attack and brought the fire under control within minutes,” Koflick said.

Firefighters cleared the scene within about three hours.

The home suffered relatively minor damage from the smoke and the water used to put out the flames.

The inside of the house remained mostly unscathed, with the majority of the damage confined to only a specific area, he said, including some of the roof trusses.

Koflick said when and how much repair work needs to be done before residents can move back in is still unknown.

“The trouble with fires occurring is not the structural damage, but there’s smoke damage throughout the building and there is some water damage throughout the building,” he said.

In addition, in order to secure the building, its utilities had been turned off.

Koflick said the cause of the fire was determined to have been accidental and there is no suspicion of foul play.

He also gave kudos to deputy fire chief Dan Lucyk, who was the incident commander on scene.

The Westlock Rural fire department, EMS and RCMP also attended the scene.
