Westlock County has opened applications for its 2025 Scholarship Grant for students attending post-secondary institutions in the fall.
The County wants to encourage more young people to pursue higher education, which is why they have set up a fund that would support students through their journey. Two county residents will receive a $500 scholarship to go towards tuition, housing, technology and books.
To be eligible, the applicant must be a resident within Westlock County and have been accepted for full-time education at an academic, technical or business school and must be willing to attend a presentation ceremony for it. Anyone attending post-secondary studies in the fall is eligible, even if they are a member or immediate family member of someone on the council.
The only stipulation is that the applicant must not have won a scholarship from the County before.
Applications will be reviewed by the Community Grant Advisory Committee, which will forward recommendations to the Council. Submissions will be evaluated based on their eligibility, a description of the relevance of students and how it relates to rural communities and their academic performance, community involvement and citizenship.
Anyone applying will be required to provide proof of acceptance and enrolment, academic performance records from the previous year and an essay outlining how their area of study is relevant to rural communities and community involvement.
The deadline to apply is Aug. 31. Recipients will be chosen by Oct. 31.
