Westlock RCMP have confirmed there are no reported injuries after an early-morning shooting last week, but are saying little else about the incident.

RCMP Cpl. Dennis Properzi said in a media release that police got a report of suspected gunshots near 101 Street and 104 Avenue at about 4 a.m. on Monday, April 28.

Police couldn’t confirm any incident involving a firearm had actually taken place until later that morning, when staff at the Best Western Hotel reported what appeared to be bullet holes in one of the rooms.

“Police attended and verified the suspected damage was caused by bullets,” Properzi said, although he did not identify the type of firearm that might have been used.

He said police have not been able to confirm that anybody was “injured or directly affected” by the incident.

At this point, police continue to look for suspects and a motive, but Properzi said he doesn’t believe the incident to have been random.

“Due to the ongoing nature of this investigation, further details are not being released at this time,” he said.

Properzi confirmed in a phone interview later in the week that rumours about a fatality associated with the shooting are unfounded, noting that in the case of a fatality following an incident like this, residents would likely notice the presence of additional police investigators in town.

Staff at the Best Western Hotel declined to comment.

RCMP continue to investigate the incident, and are asking for the public’s help in providing any information about the incident.

Tips can be reported directly to the Westlock RCMP at 780-349-4492 or people can report information anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
