Sunshine, smiles, and solstice fun in Clyde

The Clyde & District Agricultural Society hosted its annual Summer Solstice celebration on June 21, bringing together families and friends to welcome the season with fun, food, and community spirit

The Clyde & District Agricultural Society hosted its annual Summer Solstice on June 21 to mark the beginning of summer and to get kids into the family fun spirit.

The event featured a wide range of events, showings, food and an indoor market with many volunteers there to make the event a success. Some of the biggest volunteers came from the Village of Clyde Volunteer Fire Department as they hosted and cooked the pancake breakfast until 10 a.m. Then, they moved on to making traditional barbecue items, such as hot dogs and hamburgers, with all the proceeds going towards the fire department.

A parade complete with floats and dancers from Silhouette Dance Productions and The Dance Place started early in the morning. They used this opportunity to practise their routine for their performance in Disneyland California this July.

Kids could play on the bouncy castle, fly a kite and learn about horseback riding at the Gymkhana. Adults hit up the market inside the hall with over a dozen vendors selling things like 3-D printed knick-knacks, jewellery, wood carvings, dog treats and crochet amigurumi.

One booth in the market was hosted by three of the girls who plan to go to Disney with Silhouette Dance Productions. Crafty Angels are run by Alana, Haley and Liz Dul who make their jewellery, as well as, sell jibbits for Crocs. The money raised through their booth is donated to different organizations with this market going towards funding their Disneyland trip.

The car show was a highlight for everyone. High-end vehicles from the ‘60s and modern-day porches were featured in the lineup. Gord MacComb was one person who entered his 1967 Chevy Nova SS into the show. He is a frequent participant at car shows in Barrhead and Athabasca with a few cars in rotation.

Both the U9 Westlock Wild and their Rally Cap teams held their final games of the season at the Summer Solstice in the back diamond.

Kelly Patry, the lead organizer of the Clyde Summer Solstice, describes this annual event as something that people from all communities can enjoy, “It’s something the ag society likes to do for the community and have the kids come out is just a great thing, see everybody come out to our small community.”
