Villagers will head to the polls June 24 for a byelection to fill teh vacant seat on council.

It’s a three-person race for the open Village of Clyde council seat.

Danielle Dillman, John Rollins and Karen Lennox put their names forward on Nomination Day, May 13, and will be on the ballot in the June 24 byelection. The seat came open following the April 1 resignation of former Coun. Matthew White.

Mayor Christa Clausing said she’s glad to see much interest in the position. The Westlock News plans to run profiles of the candidates in editions leading up to election day.

“I thought maybe two, but when I saw that three were running … I was surprised by how many people are taking interest as sometimes there’s only one. I’m pleased there’s people who want to bring new ideas to the table and are interested in being a part of council,” said Clausing.

“Being a councillor can sometimes be a thankless job, but we all try and do our best for the community. So it’s great to see new people stepping forward with different views and ideas.”

This byelection will be the second for the community in the last six months. Art Purdy won the Dec. 11 byelection defeating Chris Terry 54-16 — the byelection was necessary following the death of Coun. Allan Van Eaton in September 2018.

Then-CAO Edward LeBlanc told council back in April that the Municipal Government Act stipulates a byelection must be held within 90 days of the vacancy.

As well, the MGA states a municipality must hold a byelection if the vacancy is more than six months before general election (the next municipal election is slated for October 2021) and if council has less than six sitting members — the village currently has four.
