The town of Westlock is sending out a call to local artists as part of a program to display public on art on utility boxes across the town.

The town is seeking original artwork that

  • Celebrates Westlock’s people, places, and stories
  • Highlights our agricultural roots, community spirit, and local heritage
  • Adds vibrancy and creativity to public spaces

Each selected design will receive a $500 honorarium and artists are able to submit three different designs with the possibility of more than one being selected. Submissions are open to all Alberta-based artists of any experience level.

“It was appealing to us because it's a fairly low-cost project that has a high impact. It's taking something existing that may not be the most visually appealing and improving it,” said Westlock Director of Planning and Development Danielle Pougher. “They're also at very high traffic areas in town at our major intersections where there’s lots of eyes and people.”

The project is similar to utility box art projects in other Alberta municipalities including St. Albert, Spruce Grove, and Calgary.

Submissions are open until June 27 at 4:30 p.m. MST and must include an artist bio and design statement explaining the submission. The winning artwork is expected to be selected in August and be displayed in early September.
