No one was injured when a tractor caught fire inside an out building on a farm property northwest of Dapp on March 23.

The residents on the property along Range Road 10 north of Highway 661 noticed the fire before 9 a.m., said Westlock County fire chief John Biro. Their quick action to call firefighters was a big factor in reducing the damage the blaze caused.

Fawcett, Jarvie and Westlock Rural firefighters were dispatched to the scene to battle the flames, Biro said.

“When they arrived on scene smoke was visible coming from a large shop,” he said.

Crews were able to knock down the fire fairly quickly after gaining access to the shop, he said, and remained on scene for about two hours dousing remaining hot spots.

The total time elapsed from receiving the call to returning to their respective halls was about three hours, Biro said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Damage to the tractor was localized in and around the cab, Biro said. The flames spread out a bit and damaged parts of the shop, but the only serious damage was to the ceiling, which he said had a hole burnt through it.

Some parts of the tractor are salvageable, he said, but it will be up to insurance officials to determine the extent of the damage.
