After nine years on Westlock town council, Robin Brett saw his political career come to an end with a second-place finish in the mayoral race on Oct. 21.

Polls closed for the 2013 municipal election at 8 p.m. on Oct. 21, but in the Town of Westlock, it took until 12:35 a.m. on Oct. 22 for the final vote count to be announced.

Ralph Leriger is Westlock’s new mayor. Leriger was elected to the position on Oct. 21 with 1,140 votes, far outpacing incumbent councillors Robin Brett (414 votes) and Marjorie Sterling Miller (158). Leriger’s vote total represented 66.

Westlock’s newest mayor is a familiar face in the community, but a new face to the political scene in town. Ralph Leriger garnered 1,140 votes to win the mayoralty, defeating challengers Robin Brett and Marjorie Sterling Miller.

Providing access to downtown Westlock for residents of Whissellville and economic development were the topic subjects of debate among the three mayoral candidates at the all-candidates forum at Westlock Memorial Hall last Wednesday.

With only two questions being posed by attendees, the four candidates who took part in the school board portion of the all-candidates forum on Oct. 9 at the Westlock Memorial Hall mostly stuck to emphasizing their experience as trustees or educators.

Nearly 70 people gathered at the Westlock Municipal Library on Oct. 3 for a chance to listen to what the three mayoral candidates had to say and grill them on the important issues.
