The Christmas season in Westlock will officially kick off this Friday, Nov. 21, with the annual Christmas Light-Up festival.

Remembrance Day ceremonies around the Westlock area were better-attended than usual this year, something Westlock Legion president Jim Klassen attributes to recent events.

There was a buzz in the air at Ed’s Auto Salvage on Nov. 3, and not the kind that comes from bees or dying cars. Twelve-year-old Curtis Plamondon shaved his head for cancer, after raising $1,360 for The Kids With Cancer Society.

Students from both St. Mary and R. F. Staples schools took part in the No Stone Left Alone ceremony on Nov. 6 at the Westlock Cemetery.

Athabasca is about to get a taste of eastern Canada. The traditional Quebecois band Le Temps Antan will be playing at the Nancy Appleby Theatre next Wednesday as part of the Heartwood Folk Music concert series. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m.

The Westlock Legion was a flurry of activity last Friday morning as close to three-dozen volunteers began to distribute thousands of poppies throughout Westlock County.

A Westlock veteran will receive France’s highest decoration for his role in D-Day at this year’s local Remembrance Day ceremony next Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Singer/songwriter Lizzy Hoyt will be coming to Athabasca for the first time with her own show on Nov. 1. The Calgary-based multi-instrumentalist will be coming to town as part of both her CD release tour and the Heartwood concert series.

St. Mary School band teacher Oscar-José Garcia and his wife Judith will be hosting a flamenco music concert this Saturday, Nov. 1 to help raise funds for a band trip to Madrid, Spain, in 2016.

If you follow hockey in Westlock at all, you would probably recognize the name of Mike Ivey. A graduate of the Westlock Minor Hockey Association, Ivey currently plays with the Westlock Senior ‘AA’ Warriors, who just kicked off their 2014-2015 season.
