It’s been 19 years and 17 shows since the Rotary Dinner Theatre first took the stage in 1992, and in that time the event has raised close to $1 million for charitable causes in Westlock and around the world.

Good weather helped draw record crowds and parade participants for the Westlock Agricultural Fair’s Aug. 16 parade. “Last year we had 56 (floats) check-in and this year we had 81,” said parade marshal Cheyanne Erickson.

Drive east on Highway 18 and you’ll see a white house tucked behind hundreds of pink, purple and white perennials. It’s a typical Westlock home that lays claim to one of the most unique couples in town.

In only three short days, the 99th edition of the Westlock and District Agricultural Fair will begin. As has become tradition, the fair kicks off with the parade, winding its way up along Main Street after getting its start at 10:30 a.m.

Although there was no air show as part of this year’s festivities, the Westlock Flying Club’s annual fly-in breakfast on Aug. 11 was still a success. “It turned out fairly well,” said club president George Hertz-Kleptow.

More than 300 motorcyclists from around the region, Western Canada and as far away as Alaska descended on Westlock on Aug. 4 for the fifth annual Ride for STARS.

A beer tasting is on the menu. Friends of the Library, a registered society that’s dedicated to making the library more accessible, has been brewing up ideas to expand the children’s resources at the Westlock Municipal Library.

A community project that began over three years ago — the restoration of the old sawmill at Jarvie — will come to fruition with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony during Jarvie Logging Days this August long weekend.

Maureen Paches’ single gold and two silver medals make her Westlock’s most decorated competitor thus far at the 2013 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games.

Members of the Westlock Regional Water Services Commission had a chance to see much of the new system when they went on an all-encompassing tour last Tuesday.
