Children learned the finer points of European-style soccer after participating in the Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp from Monday, July 28 to Friday, August 1, 2014.

Justin Blais was the Westlock area’s lone medallist at the 2014 Alberta Summer Games in Airdrie. Competing at the July 24-27 event, Blais represented Zone 5 and finished with a bronze medal in the U15 boys’ javelin with a throw of 40.51 metres.

It was not a banner week for the Westlock Red Lions. The team was winless in the two games it played last week, tying the Edmonton Warriors 13-13 on the road on July 27, and dropping a 4-2 decision to the Barrhead Orioles at home on July 28.

Last Friday’s rainfall scuttled their bid to sweep the season series with the Barrhead Orioles, but the Westlock Red Lions still posted a winning week.

In the peak of the summertime in Westlock, the local golf course becomes a hub of activity — especially leading up to the Men’s and Ladies’ Open tournaments. The annual Men’s Open runs the August long weekend, from Aug.

The Western Elite Championships is a premier volleyball competition for 16U and 17U aged athletes. Athletes and their coaches representing the four western provinces come together, this year in Edmonton, and compete in a three day long tournament.

The Midget Orioles season came to an end after losing to the Coronation Royals in the semifinals of the AA tier three provincial championships in Barrhead on Sunday, July 27, 2014.

The Paddle River Golf Course was crawling with golfers of all ages last week when the club hosted their anuual Young and Old tournament. Twenty teams participated in the event, which is almost twice the turnout the course saw last year.

Nikolas Koberstein, an 18-year-old Barrhead resident, has taken the first step to achieving his dream of playing in the National Hockey League (NHL).

After steamrolling the competition and dominating their division in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League, the Westlock Junior Rock were stopped in their tracks at the league championship last weekend.
