The Barrhead Bantam Orioles played three games over the weekend against two tough teams. The boys were off to a rough start when they found themselves against South Jasper Place Thunderstruck from Edmonton.

Age was nothing more than a number to the group of competitors that came through Barrhead for Senior Pro Rodeo last week. The June 16-17 event hosted about 100 participants from all over Alberta, and some coming from as far as B.

The 12th annual Billy Loutit Triathlon, Duathlon and Kids of Steel event is scheduled for July 26 and 27. Each year, more than 70 athletes compete and support Athabasca’s history. In 1904, a flood occurred in Athabasca.

Athabasca runner Jakob Finney, age 16, placed fourth in the 3,000-metre race and sixth in the 1,500-metre race during senior high track and field provincials in Calgary on June 6 and 7. “The 3,000 was in the morning. It was the very first event.

Athabasca took a strong contingent to the Camrose Night Classic tournament last weekend, and the results were gratifying: three of the nine Athabasca teams medaled.

It was a beautiful day for a ball game (or two) when the Barrhead Orioles took on the Sherwood Park Athletics June 15. The first of two games kicked off at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, and the Orioles came out strong.

Westlock’s junior Rock lacrosse team remains undefeated in Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League play with two strong wins last weekend. The team started the weekend with a 17-4 win over the Edmonton Blues on June 13 at the Westlock Rotary Spirit Centre.

The Westlock Lacrosse Association is celebrating a big milestone this year — its 10th season. “It’s really exciting that it’s grown every year and made it to 10 seasons,” said association president Stacey Howse.

Of the nine Westlock athletes who traveled to Foote Field in Edmonton for the provincial track and championships, just one brought home a medal — but all did very well in their events.

Three local swimmers ended up with podium finishes after the first swim meet of the season last Saturday afternoon.
