The annual rite of passage marking the beginning of the Westlock hockey season took place over the weekend. On Oct.

First place in Wheatland Football League is well within the Westlock Thunderbirds football team’s sights after hammering the hometown Vegreville Vortex 52-0 on Oct. 4.

The Thunderbirds are back in the win column. Hosting the Vermilion Marauders in their last home game of the Wheatland Football League regular season on Sept. 27, the T-Birds overcame an early deficit to march off the field 30-7 winners.

Senior ‘AA’ hockey is mere days away from returning to Westlock. The Westlock Warriors, the newest entrant to the North Central Hockey League, open their regular season on Oct. 19 at the Westlock Rotary Spirit Centre, playing host to the Edson Ice.

Breast cancer survivor Madena Reimer had always planned to enter a team in the Oct. 6 CIBC Run for the Cure at Sir Winston Churchill Square in Edmonton. It is the Reimer Warriors’ sixth year entering the run.

The Boyle School boys golf team has brought home the Zone 1A banner. The team of four boys competed in Westlock on Sept. 16. Boyle School has been attending the zone tournament since 2008 but has never placed in the top three.

What can go wrong, will go wrong, according to Edwin Parr Composite High School Pacers coach Pete Burden. After a week of disaster, Burden said the team pulled through and won last Friday against the Westlock Thunderbirds 48-34.
