The R.F. Staples senior boys basketball team entered the new year on fire, taking home gold in Lac La Biche and winning the consolation final in Fort Saskatchewan over the weekend.

The level of competition at the Westlock Curling Club was high last weekend for the Town and Country Bonspiel, which ran Jan. 6-8.

They were latecomers to the party, and were not even initially invited. They only showed up because one of the guests could not make it.

Barrhead’s Corissa Blake continues to shine on the ice, having recently been named a member of the Zone 5 female hockey team for the upcoming Alberta Winter Games Feb. 9-12 in Parkland County. Tryouts were held in Leduc Dec.

The 2012 Athabasca Mixed Open Bonspiel went off without a hitch last weekend. The event was hosted by the Athabasca Curling Club at the Multiplex and featured 22 teams, many of which came from out of town to take part in the event.

Whether winning or losing, the Athabasca Aces did nothing halfway last weekend. On Friday night in Slave Lake, they were beaten soundly by the league leading Winterhawks by a score of 9-0.

Edwin Parr Composite’s senior girls basketball team got a late Christmas present in the form of a trip to San Diego, California.

After taking a few weeks off over the holiday season, the Barrhead Midget ‘AA’ Steelers were back on the ice over the weekend, hosting two of its fellow division-leading teams in Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League action. On Jan.

Joey Degner experienced a wider range of emotion than he expected when fundraising for Heidi Peters. The former Barrhead Composite High School student was delighted that a basketball event raised nearly $600 for the teenager who is fighting cancer.
