The R.F. Staples senior girls volleyball team walked away with silver medal at the weekend’s tournament in Spruce Grove. The Thunderbirds were headed for gold when they lost out in the finals to Barrhead with scores of 25-19 and 25-18.

After a hard-fought battle last Friday, the Westlock Thunderbirds earned a 12-10 victory over the Vermilion Marauders and secured first place in Tier 2 of the Wheatland Football League. Both teams went into the Sept.

For much of Saturday the Barrhead Composite High School girls were unstoppable. They rolled over opponents with impressive ease to reach the semi-finals of the Junior Varsity Invitational Volleyball Tournament.

They scrapped for every ball, they threw themselves about, they made their fans proud … but in the end the young Gryphons succumbed to lack of experience and fatigue.

Typically when you think of a rodeo, you pictures men and women in jeans and 10-gallon hats while riding horses, but it’s not often that you think of a rodeo where the animal being ridden is an all-terrain vehicle.

Barrhead brothers Grady and Quentin Branden are celebrating a double rodeo triumph. While Grady won the team roping title in the Wildrose Rodeo, his 14-year-old brother Quentin took top honours in the junior breakaway.

After a tight round of competition at last weekend’s Prince Philip Games (PPG) competition, local pony-riding team Full Throttle brought home a bronze medal.
