The Westlock Thunderbirds improved to 2-0 on the year following a 32-8 Friday-night drubbing of the Vegreville Vortex.

It’s shaping up to be a busy year on the volleyball courts for Edwin Parr Composite’s junior teams. This year’s EPC Predators junior volleyball program will feature two girls teams and one boys team.

In their home opener at Edwin Parr Composite last Friday, the Athabasca Pacers were in tough against a strong Vermilion team. The local boys hit the field ready to put on a show for those in the crowd who braved the wind and rain.

The Westlock Thunderbirds senior girls volleyball team put in a strong showing at Gryphon Invitational Volleyball Tournament in Barrhead last weekend after only a week and a half of school and a handful of practices.

In their first tournament action of the season, the Barrhead Composite High School senior girl’s volleyball team took home a silver medal.

Supporting Slave Lake was pretty fun at the Athabasca Golf Club on Saturday, where Manitoulin Transport and Buy-Low Foods hosted the 20th Annual Charity Golf Tournament.

If all goes as planned, 2012 will see the return of senior men’s baseball to Athabasca. A handful of local ball players are seeking to organize a new team and enter play in a competitive baseball league, and Mike Merrigan is leading the charge.
