In Memoriam
ALWAYS IN OUR HEARTS

Phillip Andrew Bathgate, of Barrhead, AB (formerly of Athabasca, AB) passed away on March 21st, 2023, at the young age of 80, after battling Alzheimer’s for over 9 years.

Phillip was born on December 24, 1942, to David & Ruth Bathgate in Central Butte, SK. After Phillip finished at Central Collegiate High School, he went on to become a Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic apprenticing under Don’s Mobile Repair and worked in that field until his retirement from the County of Athabasca Public Works in 2003.

In 1967, Phil met Gwen Morris of Porcupine Plains, SK and married in Lloydminster in 1968, 54 years of marriage. Phil and Gwen went on to have 2 children. Phil & Gwen moved to the Athabasca area in 1975 from Calgary, AB and had many memorable years in the Grosmont Area.

Phil enjoyed many activities including sport fishing, commercial ice fishing, camping, gardening, game bird hunting, trap shooting, tinkering in the garage, rock hauling, playing pool, crib with friends, and going for a walk/bike ride and spending time with best friend and wife, Gwen. He loved spending time with family and friends and loved to cut wood and heat the home with the natural elements. He was very accomplished at all he did — several trap shooting trophies were won over the years and was a member of the Athabasca Gun Club. Phil also spent many years with the local volunteer Baptiste Fire Department, which for a period, held Chief. Phil had great carpentry skills completing many buildings and home additions over the years, also was skilled enough to complete several other projects such as root cellar, potato digger, V8 powered rototiller and storage rental shed on the acreage.

Phil had a great sense of humor and wit which kept you laughing, and he would be very honest when asked of his opinion, sometimes too honest! Phil was always quick to lend a hand to family and friends and loved sharing their garden crops. Phil touched a lot of people over his lifetime and will be missed greatly by all, especially his family. Phil had a kind heart and we loved him for his sense of emotions and never held back his tears…

Phil was survived by his wife Gwen, Jackie (Kitty), son Clinton (Laura), daughter Melinda (Rick), brothers Daryle (Sandra) & Richard (Dorothy), Brother-in-Law Jerry (formerly sister Jessie) grandsons Kyle (Maddie) Katona, Trent (Stephanie) Katona, Monty (Taylor) Bathgate, & great grandchildren Rayna, Dawson, and soon to be grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Many thanks to Dr. Krantz, and the wonderful nurses and support staff at the Barrhead Healthcare Centre, Dr. W.R.Keir Barrhead Continuing Care Centre, and Rose Garden Chapel.

Private service for close family will be held and in lieu of flowers the family would kindly ask for donations to the Dr. W.R.Keir Barrhead Continuing Care Centre.
