CHODAN, Steve
January 2, 1931 - November 28, 2020
Steve Chodan, formerly of Westlock, AB., passed away in hospital of COVID-19 on November. 28, 2020, at the age of 89 years.
Steve is survived by his wife of 66 years, Angela; his daughter, Lucinda (Dave) of Montreal; and his son, Brian (Kim) of Sherwood Park; grandchildren, Sarah (Rob), Tom, and Sydney (Jon); and great-grandchildren, Hannah, Zoe, and Declan. He is also survived by his sister, Alma Ostapek; sisters-in-law, Iris Chodan and Jean Chodan; and numerous nieces and nephews in the Chodan clan.
Steve will also be missed by his in-laws on the Jaeger side, who came to love the mischievous and hard-working young Ukrainian on the seismic crew who stole the heart of their lovely sister.
Steve was born close to Moose Hill, near Thorhild, the youngest of nine children. He had boundless energy and became an expert baker at his mother’s knee.
After he married, he left the seismic crew and became a teacher. He and Angie moved to Grassland, where their two children were born. In 1963, he relocated to Westlock, where he lived for the next 57 years.
Steve was vice-principal of the junior high school, and after retirement, served five terms on town council and was president of the Westlock and District Historical Society. He also played a key role in restoring Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Church near Thorhild, leading a painting crew of seniors, mowing the grass, and building a church hall well into his 80s.
Steve was always there to help with the harvest, build a garage, shingle a roof, or almost anything else. He was indefatigable in all his endeavors.
Because of the pandemic, there will be no funeral service at this time. Please remember Steve with a random act of kindness.
