This week, Multiplex staff and elected representatives spent the better part of an hour debating what to do with the theatre.

As a journalist I know very well the power of words, and how they can be carefully constructed to form beautiful ideas or to tear down. Then there is also the careless use of words that in the end does harm, intentionally or not.

Hello, you might have seen me GPSing my way around the county the past couple of weeks. My name is Jessica and I'm the newest reporter at the Advocate. I come to this little town from Medicine Hat, way down in southern Alberta where I was raised.

Well Athabasca, it’s happening. Town and county councils have approved the new pool project, complete with fitness centre, water slide and lazy river. We’re glad to see the region collaborating to build such a high-class facility.

We journalists have an ethos. We live by rules that keep objectivity in check and prevent us from falling into pits of paranoiac despair. We also have many superstitions, maxims that secretly keep the wheels of news organizations turning.
