Former Pembina Hills school division Supt. Richard Harvey did not appear in Barrhead Provincial Court last week. Harvey was scheduled to appear on July 23 to enter a plea on the fraud charges he is facing, but was not in attendance.

There is no doubt in Gerry St. Pierre’s mind how well last week’s 2013 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games went. “In my humble opinion, this was a tremendous success,” said the chair of the Games committee.

A Westlock resident says she was targeted by the “grandparent” scam recently, wherein a con artist phones up a senior citizen pretending to be one of their grandchildren and in need of money.

Blaze of Glory, a Bon Jovi tribute band from Vancouver which features lead singer Ted Moore (above), opened the July 20 Flatbush concert event at the community complex. Hundreds of spectators — from Barrhead to Slave Lake — came out to the event for a night of fun. The cover band Aerosmith Rocks also appeared and sang a wide variety of tunes.

A groundswell of support has emerged to investigate amalgamating the town and county of Westlock into a single municipality.

Thousands of dollars worth of merchandise have been stolen from a pair of Clyde Corner gas stations. Mounties say the Clyde Fas Gas was hit by thieves around 1:35 a.m.

At the 26th annual Westlock Wheels of Class Show and Shine held at Lindahl Park and the Pioneer Museum on Sunday, Jesse Wakefield (left) poses with the custom 1923 dragster he, his father Duane and grandfather Mel built over a 12-month span. This year's well-attended show featured a bevy of classic cars, trucks and motorcycles.

Westlock County residents in Division 6 will have a new councillor following the Oct. 21 election after Coun. Mike Cook announced his retirement from politics last week. Cook made the announcement at the end of the July 11 county council meeting.

The Hope Resource Centre has found a new general manager to keep the wheels of the non-profit organization rolling.
