Polls for Westlock byelection open until 8 p.m.

New mayor, council to be elected; see website for results on election night

WESTLOCK — Fawcett resident Roxann Larson, who lived next to the Fawcett Hotel and Bar, had a jarring end to 2023 when youngest son awoke and notified her of a large fire outside their home just before 5 a.m. on Dec. 31.

“The fact [the event] falls on a traditional Ukrainian New Year’s Eve is…it’s kind of like the stars aligned.”

After moving to Westlock in January 2023, Alair Plett wants to be a voice for the community and make changes to better the town.

Westlock resident Derrill Rayner wants to work towards unifying the community through honesty, transparency and a commitment to represent each member of it, if elected to sit on council.

Local businessman and Pembina Hills School Division trustee David Truckey is looking to return to council to contribute to good local government and make a difference in the community he calls home.

Westlock resident Benita Pedersen is committed to speaking up for traditional conservative values and listening to and respecting the voice of the people and ensuring it is heard.

Long-time Westlock resident Laurie Hodge wants to help make Westlock a better community for residents and visitors alike.
