The municipal elections held across Alberta Oct. 16 saw some new faces win seats in the Athabasca and Boyle area, while some old hands will be hanging up their hats.

Fiscal responsibility, medical staffing and getting new business was on the table as the Village of Boyle’s council candidates took questions from the community at the Boyle Community Centre Oct. 12.

The Candidates’ Forum was an ideal way to meet all the candidates and gain insight into determining who is best suited to represent our town.

After serving his country, veteran Tom Mykytiuk hopes to serve his community as Aspen View Public Schools Ward 5 trustee. “I recall leaving here as a 17-year-old kid going to university and it was pretty intimidating and overwhelming,” said Mykytiuk.

A familiar face on the streets of Athabasca has left town. Former Athabasca RCMP Cpl. Joanna Patry served with the town’s detachment for just over two and a half years, before accepting a position in Edmonton for general policing.

During Town of Athabasca’s final meeting of the term Oct. 3 – which only lasted 18 minutes – Coun. Tim Verhaeghe questioned an item on Coun. Joanne Peckham’s timesheet. “I do have a question regarding Coun. Peckham’s timesheet,” he said.

The 16 candidates vying for a seat on the Town of Athabasca’s council went head-to-head on local issues Oct. 4 at the Nancy Appleby Theatre during the Athabasca and District Chamber of Commerce’s candidate forum.
