From the time she started swimming lessons at five years old, Rita McCaw has always been a recreational swimmer.

There has been an explosion of creativity at the Barrhead Public Library the past two weeks, with the return of the ever-popular SPARK camp.

The pool project will cost about $10 million more than initial estimates, according to figures released last week. The projected costs of the proposed aquatic centre range from $21m to $24m.

Boredom was not an option.

Swimming is so much more than recreation to 77-year-old Bob Lee. It is a way of life, it is a form of therapy. Last year it helped him rediscover a sense of wellbeing after a serious back injury.

Barrhead’s shiny new tennis courts will soon be seeing some first-class action as players get ready to hit the court, local resident Lawrence Boucher being one of them.

You could say life has been a ball for 70-year-old LeRoy Barker. Hardball, softball and slo-pitch – the games have thrilled him as a player and spectator.

Moves are under way to fill a “gap in transportation services” in Barrhead. It could lead to a taxi, bus or van service to help those without a vehicle, on a low income or suffering from a disability.
