Biathlon is a natural for 12-year-old Henrik Quintilio, a Barrhead County resident, who travelled this past weekend to Medicine Hat to compete in the Alberta Winter Games, but that might not come as a surprise to anyone who knows the Quintilio family

It was a total team game. That’s how Steelers head coach Trevor Whiting described the first game of the second and final round of the provincial qualifiers to see who will represent Zone 3 in the Provincial Championship Tournament.

The Westlock Curling Club’s annual mixed bonspiel went off without hitch last weekend, Feb. 12-13. Sixteen rinks came from as far away as Beaumont to participate in the mixed spiel — team skips and thirds had to be opposite genders to participate.

The Westlock Bantam Warriors were poised to represent Zone 3 at Bantam ‘D’ provincials, but a 5-2 OT home loss on Feb. 8 cut those dreams short.

Fifteen different cheerleading teams participated in EPCís Cheerfest on Feb. 6 as the annual competition celebrated itís tenth anniversary. Athabasca had five different teams represent the area with two of them finishing in the number one spot.

The Midget ëAí Athabasca Hawks defeated the Barrhead Steelers in good fashion last Saturday taking the game 4-3. This is the first time that the Hawks have beaten the top team in their hockey division this regular season.

The result was never in question. The only thing in doubt was would the Barrhead Bantam Pirates win the game and if so by how much. On Thursday, Feb.

The Barrhead Steelers faced off against the Spruce Grove Jets on Wednesday, in Barrhead, for the last game of the first round of provincial qualifiers, and won with a final score of 5-2.

Initiation hockey dominated the ice of the Westlock Rotary Spirit Centre on Saturday, Feb. 6 as teams competed in Westlock Minor Hockey Associations’ annual initiation tourney.

The Midget ëAí Hawks now have the upper hand in their provincial playoffs, after defeating the Spruce Grove Bandits 5-1 on Jan. 27.
