The Athabasca Soccer Associationís annual tournament was a big success on the weekend. Held at Whispering Hills Primary School, the tournament welcomed 47 teams in four different divisions (U6, U8, U10, U12).

Last month, Hockey Alberta announced that body contact would no longer be allowed at the peewee level. Since then, Hockey Canada has made a similar decision, making body contact in peewee hockey a thing of the past across the country.

Westlock’s Grey Lions have qualified for the final of the Harvey J. Doherty Memorial baseball tournament May 31-June 2 at Keller Field in Westlock. The championship game started at 6 p.m. on Sunday, after the Westlock News’ press time.

Westlock swimmers earned five medals at their first swim meet of the season. Competing at the Fred Morie Memorial swim meet in Westlock on June 1, the Westlock Gators’ 28 swimmers came away with two golds and three bronzes.

The local hockey landscape will undergo a change this winter with an expansion of the North Central Bulls program.

The 11th annual Billy Loutit Despatch Triathlon is set for July 20-21. The Kids of Steel event will be held on Saturday (July 20) while the Loutit Triathlon, as well as the new duathlon, will be held on the Sunday.

Dear Editor, Unless you’ve experienced the love of your own child, you can not know the pain of losing that child. A parent already has a natural protectiveness toward their child that of which that child will test over and over again.

The Red Lions remain undefeated four games into the North Central Alberta Baseball League season. Playing at home on May 22, the Red Lions knocked off the Edmonton Warriors 5-0, running their record to 4-0 on the year.
