The Steelers are champions. How good that sounds for Barrhead. And how good it must feel for the players and their coaching staff after a rollercoaster season.

The Westlock Atom ‘A’ Warriors’ quest for a provincial title came to an abrupt end on Sunday morning. At the Provincial ‘B’ Championship in Fairview, held March 14-17, the Warriors fell 7-3 to the Blackfalds Bulldogs in the semifinal.

A trio of R.F. Staples alumni — Jessica Carlyon, Sophie Desranleau and Tina Frose — will settle for silver following the national volleyball championship in Lloydminster last weekend.

After a monumental comeback in their semifinal, the St. Mary senior boys basketball team simply ran out of gas en route to a second-place finish at the North Central 1A zone tournament over the weekend.

The Barrhead Seniors Gryphons have been waiting all year for this opportunity. They wanted to show the rest of the competition they are best team in Alberta’s North Central Zone.

The Predators are on to provincials. Edwin Parr Compositeís senior girls basketball team won the zone championships on the weekend in Edson, and their gold medals are also tickets to this weekendís provincial championships in Strathmore.
