The Covenant Canadian Reformed School (CCRS) junior volleyball teams had an exciting weekend of competition in the North Central Junior High League Zone Championship at Boyle School Nov. 17.

The wait is over. Enough snow has fallen for sledders to don helmets and fire up machines. Time to hit those trails … and have some fun. But as ever people have been urged to remain vigilant and obey safety rules.

Last Saturday’s Westlock Minor Hockey dinner-dance-auction was a big success, rivaling previous editions in terms of money raised.

The Westlock Pee Wee Tier 2 Warriors were a little rusty against the Spruce Grove Chiefs last Saturday afternoon after having had two weeks off.

Senior boys and girls Gryphons have shown again they can mix it with the best in the provincials. Just a few points denied the boys the honour of waking up this week as provincial champions.

The Athabasca Aces were close, but not close enough in a pair of games last weekend. On Friday night they played host to the Devon Barons and lost 7-5. On Saturday they were in Drayton Valley and lost 6-5 in a shootout.

A remarkable season reached its end last weekend for Edwin Parr Composite’s senior boys volleyball team. The Predators were in Whitecourt for the provincial championship, where they won two of their five games, falling short of the playoff round.

One bad match in the semifinals was all it took to knock the R.F. Staples senior boys volleyball team out of contention for a spot at provincials.

“The best team in the zone won.” That was how Keith Szautner, coach of the R.F. Staples senior girls volleyball team, described his squad’s loss to the Barrhead Composite High School Gryphons in the 3A North Central Zone final Nov. 17 at R.F.

Boyle School’s senior high volleyball teams wrapped up their seasons at zone tournaments on the weekend. The boys Huskies were in Westlock, where they won silver. “They did really well. I’m really proud of them,” said coach Joel Sawka.
