There were times when some spectators probably felt like strapping on skates and wading into the action on Saturday at the Agrena.

The St. Mary senior boys volleyball team are champions. Competing in the R.F. Staples JV tournament over the weekend, the Sharks lost only three of the 14 sets they played en route to the gold medal victory over Onoway.

The Wheatland Football League season is over in Westlock. Playing in their first playoff game of the year in Athabasca on Oct. 20, the Westlock Thunderbirds came up short, losing 40-14 to the Pacers.

The Barrhead gyms were full of “oohs”, “ahhs” and “yays” last Saturday. There were also constant bursts of applause over a steady drumbeat of sneakers.

With a 40-14 beating of the R.F. Staples Thunderbirds in the first round of the playoffs last Saturday, the Athabasca Pacers punched their ticket to the championship game against Vermillion.

The Boyle Blazers midget team opened their 2012-13 season with a pair of losses at the Millview Recreation Complex last weekend. On Friday the team was home to St. Paul in a tight game that ultimately ended up as a 4-2 loss.

After a strong start and a spectacular finish, the Westlock Thunderbirds football team came to a well-earned 16-13 victory over the Vermilion Marauders last Friday night.

The Westlock Thunderbirds senior boys volleyball team went undefeated to claim a gold medal at a tournament in Athabasca last weekend.

Senior high volleyball teams from around the region gathered at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex last weekend as Edwin Parr Composite hosted their annual tournament. The home teams did quite well, as both the EPC boys and girls won bronze.

Playing in what some may call classic football weather, the Athabasca Pacers handed the Vegreville Vortex a 42-22 defeat last Friday.
