After a strong round-robin and a decisive victory in the semifinals, the R.F. Staples seniors boys volleyball team came within a few points of a gold medal at the Westlock Rotary Spirit Centre last weekend.

After an impressive showing at the R.F. Staples home tournament at the Westlock Rotary Spirit Centre last weekend, the senior girls volleyball team walked away with a silver medal.

Athabasca Pacers – Tier 2 Champions. The local football team claimed their spot at the top of their division of the Wheatland Football League with a decisive 34-14 defeat of the Vermillion Marauders on Saturday.

Athabasca’s senior high volleyball teams were on fire at the 41st annual J.A. Williams High School Wow Pow Tournament in Lac La Biche last weekend. Edwin Parr Composite’s senior girls had a strong showing, ultimately bowing out in the semi-finals.

Football season is over in Westlock. Playing in their first playoff game of the year in Athabasca on Oct. 20, the Westlock Thunderbirds came up short, losing 40-14 to the Pacers.

There were times when some spectators probably felt like strapping on skates and wading into the action on Saturday at the Agrena.

The St. Mary senior boys volleyball team are champions. Competing in the R.F. Staples JV tournament over the weekend, the Sharks lost only three of the 14 sets they played en route to the gold medal victory over Onoway.

The Barrhead gyms were full of “oohs”, “ahhs” and “yays” last Saturday. There were also constant bursts of applause over a steady drumbeat of sneakers.

With a 40-14 beating of the R.F. Staples Thunderbirds in the first round of the playoffs last Saturday, the Athabasca Pacers punched their ticket to the championship game against Vermillion.
