The Jarvie general store was put up for sale on May 18.
The new general store was completed in August 2024 after the nearly 100-year-old store burned down in a 2020 fire. It is currently selling for $189,500.
The owner, Charles Desranleau, is currently running a campsite as well as the general store, both of which take up most of his time.
“The store is very time consuming. It's paying for itself but I thought it would be great if a local person would take it, then I know it would stay,” said Desranleau. “I'm not selling it until I know for sure.”
The store generated some controversy in April when Desranleau attempted to start selling cannabis at the store. Westlock County hadn’t written a bylaw about the selling of cannabis in the area, which created some confusion, which they attempted to sort out at a public hearing on April 10.
“It ended up neutral. There was just a bit of negative stuff which is common for a meeting like that, but it wasn’t enough to shut it down,” said Desranleau. “I kind of decided I would just not do it right now, probably in the future though. I can pursue it because it is legal, but I'll let it calm down here for a while.”
