Valentine’s Day may be a day for love, but for a group of athletes it meant a chance to fight. On Feb.

It was a hard weekend for the senior girls basketball squad. The Boyle Huskies team were in Westlock for a tournament and found themselves dealing with a short bench after injuries left them with just six players for their final two games.

A long trek to Cold Lake on the weekend didn’t turn out the best for the two senior high school basketball teams from Athabasca.

With Hockey Alberta’s planned changes to the residency structure for the AA program slated to occur in the fall, the loss Saturday night will certainly be the last for the North Central Midget AA Bulls program.

The Rich Valley Skating Club is hosting their 36th Annual Skating Carnival on Sunday, Mar. 15. The event kicks off at 2 p.m. at the Rich Valley Agriplex. Tickets cost $3 for those over the age of five and include a ticket for the door prize.

The Barrhead Steelers are one step closer to their eventual goal of becoming the Provincial Midget A champions. On Monday, Feb. 9, the Steelers defeated the Edson Sabres, 4 to 3, at the Agrena to move on to the third round of the provincial playoffs.

Even though it was the first time this season the club didn’t earn a first place finish, there were still many exceptional performances by the members of the Athabasca Rapids Swim Club.

A local cross country skier put up a valiant effort at Junior World Cross Country Ski Championship two weeks ago.

There were some big positives the past week for a struggling senior boys basketball team. It began last Tuesday on their home floor with a 59-53 victory over Devon, in a game that nearly slipped away from the Edwin Parr Composite Predators club.

After a three-week rest from competitive action, the Westlock Senior ‘AA’ Warriors are rested and healthy for their semifinal playoff series.
