With harvest just around the corner, farmers in the Westlock region will be the first to tell you it hasn’t been a great year in the fields, but it hasn’t got to the point where an agricultural state of emergency needs to be declared either.

Westlock County will hold a public hearing Sept. 10 regarding future development within floodway and flood fringe areas near the Pembina River. About 25 ratepayers and concerned citizens packed into council chambers for council’s Aug.

Incumbent Arnold Viersen has officially announced that he will run for a second term as the MP for the Peace River-Westlock riding.

At just 21-years-old, Isaac Skuban is already considering a life in politics and the vacant seat on Westlock County council is his first step along the way. Skuban joins Mary Ashton-Groulx, Lori Latrielle and David Woynorowski as the four Sept.

With nomination day having now passed, the byelection race for the empty seat on Westlock County council now has four hopefuls vying for the Division 5 seat vacated by Darrell Osmond in June.

The countdown is on as the world-renowned RCMP Musical Ride returns to the Town of Westlock this week. Westlock’s shows, the first in the community since 2006, go Aug. 7 at the race track next to the Rotary Spirit Centre at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Mary Ashton-Groulx is the second candidate to run for the open seat on Westlock County council. The byelection for Div. 5 is scheduled for Sept. 17.

Roughly $2.3 million in federal and provincial grants for stormwater management in the Town of Westlock, which was promised earlier this year, has been on hold since the April election, pending provincial review.

A Westlock teenager faces a second-degree murder charge following the early-morning shooting of a 62-year-old man. RCMP received a 911 call at 12:10 a.m. Aug. 2 that a man was believed to be injured as a result of a gunshot wound.
