The Edwin Parr Composite School co-ed cheerleading team placed third at the Alberta High School Athletic Association Provincials Tournament last Saturday in Edmonton. Head cheerleading coach Barb Lachance had nothing but praise for her team.

The Barrhead Bantam Pirates finished their season on top of the world, claiming gold in the 1660 league championship against the Vegreville Wranglers.

The Barrhead Steelers have done it. After four days of hard-fought hockey in Edson, the boys have been named the 2014 Alberta Midget B Provincial champions. Proud coach Jason Murrell said the boys perfomed very well over the course of the tournament.

Westlock’s Tier 2B Peewee Warriors are preparing this week for a trip to Provost where they’ll vie for the provincial ‘B’ title. Coach Darcy Romanuik said given the amount of experience his team has with provincial tournaments, he’s optimistic.

Haley Heffel is once again a wrestling champion. Heffel was the only member of the R.F. Staples wrestling team to come home with a medal from the March 7-8 provincial tournament in Calgary, winning gold in the girls’ 61-kilogram division.

The rankings of the zone came out last week and placed Barrhead girls fourth and Edson girls fifth. These two teams started off the zone tournament in the opening game at 2:00 p.m.

Gold is the only colour Barrhead’s senior Gryphons boys seem to recognize. It is the colour of their outfit. It is the colour of their favourite medals.

The Edwin Parr Composite (EPC) Predators boys and girls senior basketball teams competed in zones this past weekend with the boys coming up short in the bronze medal game and the girls missing out on the gold medal by two points.

The March Meltdown Tournament runs this weekend, where spectators can watch 12 hockey teams battle it out at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex. Attendees can also enter a draw for two mini fridges filled with wine and beer.

The Athabasca midget Winter Hawks will not be moving on to provincials after two consecutive losses to the Jasper Bearcats, including at 4-0 loss last Friday at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex.
