The Westlock Thunderbirds football team put the finishing touches on a successful season with an awards banquet at the Westlock Inn last Thursday night.

The Westlock Senior ‘AA’ Warriors are settling into their groove and playing the kind of hockey they want to play — with the results on the score sheets to prove it. The locals were in high spirits after a 5-4 win Dec.

After games like the one on Friday night at the Agrena, perhaps it is time for hockey fans to receive an official health warning: this sport can seriously damage your health.

Barrhead Bantam 1 downed Stony Plain Bantam 1 11-3 at the Agrena on Saturday. The first period ended with Barrhead up 4-0. Brayden Derudder scored twice, while Kyle Sommers and Mitchel Carstairs also found the back of the net.

The Athabasca Aces punished their archrivals from Slave Lake with an 8-2 pounding last Friday at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex. Coach Curtis Creaser characterized the Aces’ style of play as gritty and physical.

If the cold weather holds up, skiers could expect to hit the slopes at Tawatinaw as early as this weekend. Westlock County recreation services coordinator Adam Esch said he’s confident the hill will be open by the Dec. 13th weekend at the latest.

The Edwin Parr Composite High School Predators boys volleyball team placed seventh in the province at the 50th annual provincial volleyball championship last weekend.

The Barrhead Steelers lost their first game in seven weeks on the weekend, when they were bested by Stettler Legion Dec. 1.

The senior boys Gryphons held their own and represented Barrhead well at the ASAA 50th Anniversary Provincial Volleyball Championships in Edmonton Nov. 28-30. It was a busy three days for the Gryphons.
