In many parts of North America, football is seen as a sport for late summer and early fall. But in Barrhead, the football season starts in the spring and before taking the summer off and ramping up again in the fall.

The Westlock Red Lions began their season on a high note with a 1-0 victory over the Edmonton Blackhawks during their May 9 home opener at Keller Field in Westlock.

The Westlock midget lacrosse team rocked the competition last Saturday, defeating the Edmonton Warriors MB2 team 9-2 and the Edmonton Warriors MB1 team 4-2.

Nathan Bennett knew that 2012 was going to be his last year as a professional volleyball player, but it didn’t turn out the way he envisioned.

Athabasca’s Bantam girls softball team got their season started with a pair of games last week. On May 8 the girls were in Dapp to take on a team from Jarvie, while on May 10 they were home in Athabasca at Jubilee Ball Park.

Barrhead’s track and field athletes are gearing up for a jam-packed next few weeks, with no fewer than six meets on tap for elementary, junior high and high school athletes wanting to show their stuff. “It’s a big season,” said coach Gayle Lamothe.
