At least one Barrhead team emerged from the St. Patrick’s Day weekend as champions after the Atom ‘A’ Hawks defeated the Redwater Rush 4-1 in front of a cheering crowd at the Agrena Sunday afternoon. “It feels good,” said coach David Schmidt.

Speed skater Tyler Chapman is so fast that by the time you finish reading this sentence he will be half way through a 111-metre race. At the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games on Feb. 29, he timed 14.64 seconds in the 111 m final.

Two Westlock-area athletes wrestled their way to the podium last weekend, both capturing gold at the 2012 Alberta Open held in Ponoka.

Next stop, provincials. Edwin Parr Composite’s senior girls basketball team won their zone championship last weekend in Athabasca. It’s the first zone championship for the EPC senior girls in 12 years, and it didn’t come easy.

R.F. Staples’ Austin Tremblay pinned down a silver medal at the high-school provincial wrestling championships last weekend in Okotoks.

The St. Mary Sharks left the zones tournament last Saturday with a well-earned bronze medal, but that is unfortunately not enough to advance to provincials this weekend.
