Lou Rondeau’s coaching career is studded with great achievements. One memory, however, stands out like a crown jewel. The year is 2006. Barrhead Composite High School has been striving for a while to get a seat at the top table of volleyball players.

The 2012 Athabasca Annual Soccer Tournament was held on the weekend, and it was a big success according to the organizers. “We had everything on our side: sunshine, medals and so much fun,” exclaimed one organizer, Lorrill Waschuk.

This year’s Bryan Mudryk Golf Classic got off to a great start last weekend as a pair of companion events were blessed with good weather and passionate participants.

With the 10th Annual Bryan Mudryk Golf Classic less than a month away, the event’s namesake is putting in some extra work on the course. “I just got out (to golf).

So far this season, Athabasca’s Peewee Trappers are playing perfect baseball. The team won their first two games in early May and then had a lot of time off thanks to a pair of rainouts and the May long weekend.

Winning was important to some, giving them a chance to test fitness levels before more serious runs. For others just to complete the 6.6 kilometre course represented an achievement of sorts. It provided a feel good factor.

The growling could be heard from afar. It reverberated through woodland and a nearby golf course. Every so often it seemed to intensify, as if some powerful beast was summoning up an extra lung-bursting spurt of energy.

There may have been football being play on the field Saturday afternoon in Westlock, but for many people their thoughts were elsewhere. The annual jamboree marking the end of the Thunderbirds’ spring camp was renamed the Dr.

R.F. Staples track and field athletes nearly had a banner day at the zone meet May 24 at Foote Field in Edmonton.
