The 2012 Rotary Sportsmans Dinner packed the Athabasca Regional Multiplex last Friday as close to 500 people came to enjoy the evening with a pair of Canada ’s Olympic champions.

The Athabasca and District Minor Hockey Association (ADMHA) held its annual Awards Night at the Multiplex last Tuesday, with all of the 2011-12 teams present along with their friends and family.

The best young badminton players around were in action at Boyle School and the Athabasca Regional Multiplex last Thursday for the badminton regional competition. The ‘A’ event was held in Boyle while the ‘B’ and ‘C’ events took place in Athabasca.

A festive atmosphere was in the air at the Barrhead Legion on April 27 when Special Olympics officials came to town for a fundraising spaghetti lunch.

Five Barrhead badminton players will be heading off to Grimshaw May 4-5 after qualifying for the provincial tournament at the Zone meet April 24 at Barrhead Composite High School.

The Westlock Red Lions had their first outdoor practice last Saturday, and are looking to claim the North Central Alberta Baseball League title this year.

Local wrestling star Haley Heffel was just shy of a podium spot April 15 after losing the bronze medal match by a pin at the National Cadet and Juvenile Wrestling Championships.

They competed fiercely. And just as importantly they displayed class and pride. Coach Kyle Becker had nothing but praise for Barrhead Composite High School badminton players after their performance in Whitecourt.

Players in the Club 55 Plus Bowling League marked the end of their season with the awarding of plaques and trophies last Friday at Barrhead’s Blue Heron Bowl.
