It’s apropos that the Athabasca and Colinton fire departments both held open houses recently, when the consequences of fire are at the forefront of most people’s thoughts.

The people of Westlock, and in fact all of Alberta, can hold their heads high.

It has been more than a week since fires devastated the town of Slave Lake. For over a week, evacuees have been forced out of their homes, their jobs and their lives.

In the face of tragedy, people of this province have proven they have what it takes to take care of their own.

Dear Editor, Meier Travel's Tommy Hunter Tour on Sunday, April 17 began like all our other coach tours with a passenger pick-up at the Barrhead IGA. This trip was to see Tommy Hunter’s farewell concert at the Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton.

Dear Editor, To the residents and businesses of the Barrhead community, we would like to send out our heart-felt thank you. In these difficult times, we are overwhelmed with emotion from your generosity.

Sometimes, there is no silver lining. There’s only a cloud. The fires that devastated Slave Lake and necessitated the total evacuation of the town on Sunday night have destroyed homes, businesses and countless possessions.

Fair is fair, unless you’re talking about funding recreation services in the region. There is obviously a great divide between the town and the county when it comes to the various facilities in town that most of us enjoy.

Students and staff at Barrhead Elementary School have 32,000 reasons to be proud of themselves.
