Boyle’s bantam hockey players are blazing through the provincial playdowns. The team eliminated Lac La Biche 13-0 in the first round (a two-game, total points series) and the second round wasn’t much harder on them.

The 2011-12 North Central Hockey League season will be remembered as one of great highs and lows for the Athabasca Aces and their fans. They reached higher than they ever had before in finishing third in the seven-team league with a record of 10-9-1.

Another strong win has the Barrhead midget ‘AA’ Steelers heading up to Slave Lake in March for the Midget AA Minor provincial tournament. Taking on the Spruce Grove PAC Saints in front of a home crowd Feb.

It had all the makings of another classic matchup in the storied rivalry between the two towns. On one side were the Gryphons boys from Barr-head. On the other were the Thunderbirds from R.F. Staples in Westlock. And there could only be one winner.

The R.F. Staples Thunderbirds boys’ basketball team played several impressive matches during last weekend’s tournament in Barrhead and came home with a silver medal.

Local skier Kara Siegle earned a silver medal at the 2012 Alberta Winter Games Feb. 10-11, doing her fellow Tawatinaw Valley Freeriders and Westlock-area residents proud.

Three Westlock wrestlers brought home a total of four medals after a successful performance at the Highwood Classic in High River over the weekend.

Westlock-area athletes failed to make the podium at the Alberta Winter Games skiing and snowboarding events hosted at the Tawatinaw Valley Ski Hill Friday and Saturday.

Yell for yellow was the motto of Barrhead swim fans last weekend. For two days yellow became the favourite colour of every local parent, grandparent, aunt and uncle at the town’s swimming pool.

It was a weekend when everyone left the Agrena a winner.
